Biography/Artist Statement

As a plein air painter, Marilyn Froggatt covers the landscape from the Coachella Valley to the Pacific Northwest and east to the Rocky Mountains. She feels there is something unique in every scene she captures and often goes back to the same place many times to paint. She uses bold brush strokes to depict a sense of time, space and light.

Marilyn was born and raised in Southern California. At a young age she showed an interest in drawing and painting and was often taken by her parents to the Huntington Library, the LA Arboretum, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. While in her twenties her husband, a photojournalist, gave her an old SLR camera and taught her how to manually adjust for light and focus. That was the beginning of her career in landscape photography that led to plein air and studio painting.

While owning a motorhome, Marilyn and her husband have traveled extensively throughout the Western United States and she’s painted in many of the National Parks on the Oregon Coast, Northern Washington, Utah, Jackson, Wyoming, the Tetons, Arizona, and of course all over Southern and Northern California.

Marilyn has studied and taken workshops from Elaine Mathews, Terry Masters, Mark Kerckhoff, Greg LaRock, Brad Holt, John Budicin and Randy Sexton. She currently shows her work at the Desert Art Center in Palm Springs, Borrego Art Institute in Borrego Springs, Artists Council at the Galen and several art shows per year in the Coachella Valley and Inland Empire.

Her memberships and outreach currently include co-chair of the Desert Chapter of the California Art Club, former 7-Year Board Member of the Desert Art Center, member of the American Impressionist Society, and the Desert Plein Air Association.

Marilyn also lectures on the early California Impressionists and frequently does demos for art associations in the Southern California. She teaches art in the Coachella Valley. She paints regularly with the Desert Plein Air Association and the California Art Club.
