Biography/Artist Statement

Gideon Cohn is a contemporary artist whose work merges surrealism, new realism, and spiritual exploration into luminous visual experiences. Working primarily with oil and acrylic on canvas, as well as pastel, charcoal, and mixed media on paper, Cohn creates layered compositions that explore the relationship between light, consciousness, and the human experience.

Originally from Israel, Gideon’s early life on a kibbutz and his experiences working the desert landscape profoundly shaped his relationship with nature, light, and transformation. Later, after moving to Southern California, the region’s intense sunlight, desert terrain, coastal environments, and vibrant flora became powerful influences in his artistic language. These experiences continue to inform the energetic color palette and sense of movement that characterize his work.

Cohn’s paintings frequently depict the human body, symbolic figures, and dreamlike landscapes that exist between realism and the surreal. Through layered color, dimensional surfaces (3D), and illusionistic depth, his works function as portals into expanded states of awareness. Many pieces contain hidden imagery and visual narratives embedded within the layers, inviting viewers to look deeper and discover evolving meanings over time.

Gideon previously owned two galleries in Southern California and has exhibited widely across the region, including Palm Springs, Palm Desert’s El Paseo, Rancho Mirage, Hermosa Beach, Idyllwild, and La Quinta, as well as in Los Angeles, San Diego, Santa Fe, Petaluma, Laguna Beach and New York City. His work continues to be shown in galleries, museums, and art events throughout the United States.

He was also the initiator and director for ten years of the art division of The Ophelia Project, a nonprofit under the JFK Foundation, where he mentored teenage girls in developing and executing large-scale collaborative art installations.

Gideon currently works from Point Happy Studio in La Quinta, California, where he continues to explore imagery that blends the physical and metaphysical. His paintings invite viewers into radiant visual spaces where light, imagination, and transformation converge, offering moments of reflection, wonder, and connection.
