Primary Medium: Roketsuzome - Japanese wax & dye resist painting

For the past fifty years, my primary creative discipline has been a batik artist in the ancient Japanese wax-resist dyeing method known as Roketsuzome. This technique traveled from India, Southeast Asia, and China, crossing to Japan during the Nara period (710–794 AD). What attracted me to the Japanese approach is the application of hot wax onto the surface using brushes rather than stencils. This produces a vibrant, richly layered, painterly quality.
In the Fall of 2025, I returned to California State University, Long Beach, to complete my Bachelor of Studio Arts degree. This provided excellent opportunities to explore other mediums such as oil painting, ceramics, and printmaking. However, obtaining a degree isn't my ultimate goal. Expanding my creativity in the pursuit of truth, beauty and peace, are hopefully, in some small way, the things I can contribute to this world.
