Biography/Artist Statement

I attended Temple University's Tyler School of Art graduating in 1971 with a BFA in Sculpture and Art History. I taught Art in a small grammar school in southern NJ for two years; I then attended The School of the Art Institute of Chicago where I received an MFA in sculpture in 1975. My creative inspirations are broad, originating in images I have scavenged from a wide range of sources - maps, diagrams, pattern, calligraphic, botanical, ethnographic and vernacular imagery. I combine disparate elements, patterns, textures and colors in a strategy that defines the exploration of pictorial and psychological space. A reordering of incongruent visual ideas creates complex paintings and collages which explore the abstract language of mark making. The work emerges through a succession of intuitive decisions guided by the internal logic of each composition.
